Climate signal age effects in boreal tree-rings: Lessons to be learned for paleoclimatic reconstructions

2016

Abstract Age-related alternation in the sensitivity of tree-ring width (TRW) to climate variability has been reported for different forest species and environments. The resulting growth-climate response patterns are, however, often inconsistent and similar assessments using maximum latewood density (MXD) are still missing. Here, we analyze climate signal age effects (CSAE, age-related changes in the climate sensitivity of tree growth) in a newly aggregated network of 692 Pinus sylvestris L. TRW and MXD series from northern Fennoscandia. Although summer temperature sensitivity of TRW ( r All = 0.48) ranges below that of MXD ( r All = 0.76), it declines for both parameters as cambial age in…

Constraints on off-shell Higgs boson production and the Higgs boson total width in ZZ → 4ℓ and ZZ → 2ℓ2ν final states with the ATLAS detector

2018

A measurement of off-shell Higgs boson production in the and decay channels, where ℓ stands for either an electron or a muon, is performed using data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of TeV. The data were collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2016 at the Large Hadron Collider, and they correspond to an integrated luminosity of . An observed (expected) upper limit on the off-shell Higgs signal strength, defined as the event yield normalised to the Standard Model prediction, of 3.8 (3.4) is obtained at 95% confidence level (CL). Assuming the ratio of the Higgs boson couplings to the Standard Model predictions is independent of the momentum transfer of the Higgs…

Age Differences in Face Processing: The Role of Perceptual Degradation and Holistic Processing

2017

Abstract Objectives We simultaneously investigated the role of three hypotheses regarding age-related differences in face processing: perceptual degradation, impaired holistic processing, and an interaction between the two. Methods Young adults (YA) aged 20–33-year olds, middle-age adults (MA) aged 50–64-year olds, and older adults (OA) aged 65–82-year olds were tested on the context congruency paradigm, which allows measurement of face-specific holistic processing across the life span (Meinhardt-Injac, Persike & Meinhardt, 2014. Acta Psychologica, 151, 155–163). Perceptual degradation was examined by measuring performance with faces that were not filtered (FSF), with faces filtered to …

Comparison of Macular Thickness in Patients with Keratoconus and Control Subjects Using the Cirrus HD-OCT

2014

Purpose. The aim of the present study was to compare macular thickness in patients with keratoconus (KC) with macular thickness in healthy subjects.Subjects and Methods.Twenty-six patients with KC and 52 control subjects were included. The macular structure was evaluated using a Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT. The scan pattern used was 512 × 128, which covers an area of approximately 6 × 6 mm of the retina. The cube volume was assessed as well as macular thickness in each of the 9 sectors defined by the software.Results.The mean signal strength was significantly lower in the KC group (mean 8.4, range 6–10) compared with the control group (mean 9.7, range 7–10),P<0.0001(unpairedt-test). There were no…

Dual Connectivity in Non-Stand Alone Deployment mode of 5G in Manhattan Environment

2020

| openaire: EC/H2020/815191/EU//PriMO-5G The main target of this paper is to analyze the performance of an outdoor user in a dense micro cellular Manhattan grid environment using a ray launching simulation tool. The radio propagation simulations are performed using a Shoot and Bouncing Ray (SBR) method. The network performance is analyzed at three different frequencies i.e. 1.8 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 28 GHz. Additionally, the benefits of combining LTE and potential 5G frequency bands by using feature of Dual Connectivity (DC) in an outdoor scenario has been highlighted. The considered performance metrics are received signal level, SINR, application throughput. The acquired simulation results fro…

RF-Based Location Using Interpolation Functions to Reduce Fingerprint Mapping

2015

Indoor RF-based localization using fingerprint mapping requires an initial training step, which represents a time consuming process. This location methodology needs a database conformed with RSSI (Radio Signal Strength Indicator) measures from the communication transceivers taken at specific locations within the localization area. But, the real world localization environment is dynamic and it is necessary to rebuild the fingerprint database when some environmental changes are made. This paper explores the use of different interpolation functions to complete the fingerprint mapping needed to achieve the sought accuracy, thereby reducing the effort in the training step. Also, different distri…

Tracking Mobile Robot in Indoor Wireless Sensor Networks

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://10.1155/2014/837050 This work addresses the problem of tracking mobile robots in indoor wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Our approach is based on a localization scheme with RSSI (received signal strength indication) which is used widely in WSN. The developed tracking system is designed for continuous estimation of the robot's trajectory. A WSN, which is composed of many very simple and cheap wireless sensor nodes, is deployed at a specific region of interest. The wireless sensor nodes collect RSSI information sent by mobile robots. A range-based data fusion sche…

RF-based node system for blind navigation in running activities

2008

The system presented is oriented for use by blind adults or children in running activities at a stadium or an analogical large space. The system dynamically provides a blind person with navigation related information. Radio signal strength measurements are used in localization task. The system makes a blind person more independent in sport, eliminating the need in explicit human assistance.

2015

In this paper, the influence and improvement of the localization accuracy achieved using a fingerprint database with information coming from different channels and radio signal strength levels is evaluated. This study uses IEEE 802.15.4 networks with different power levels and carrier frequency channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Experimental results show that selecting part of this information with a cleverer data processing can provide similar or better localization accuracy than using the whole database.

Effect of multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses on the Cirrus HD OCT retinal measurements

2011

Background Simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses are widely used to alleviate the symptoms of presbyopia. These contact lenses create simultaneous retinal images due to the incoming light distribution being divided into two or more focuses. Our aim was to evaluate whether the multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses affect the measurements of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods In this cross-over study, 30 eyes of 30 subjects with a mean age of 50.42 ± 7.82 years were fitted with multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses. Using the RNFL Thickness Analysis mode of the Cirrus HD (Carl Zeiss, Meditec, D…
